Serena picks up fans in D.C.
POSTED July 3, 3:01 AM
Serena Williams can already boast a strong D.C. connection: her sister Isha Price-Williams works at the Southeast Tennis and Learning Center. But now that she’s joined the Washington Kastles (our new World Team Tennis franchise), she’s got more in-the-Beltway fans than she knew pulling for her to win her third Wimbledon this weekend.
“That’d be pretty awesome,” said owner Mark Ein of the prospect of introducing a newly minted All-England champ at her first home match on Tuesday. “She’ll bring the plate,” he promised, referring to the ladies’ trophy, “or we’ll get her a reasonable copy.”
Kastles player Mashona Washington was more practical about her new teammate. “I just hope she’s well-rested,” she said.
They spoke at a rooftop reception overlooking Kastles Stadium at City Center DC.
Also on hand: the team’s dreadlocked coach, Thomas Blake, who just returned from coaching his brother, American star James Blake, at Wimbledon. Unfortunately, he said, the team’s top player, Justin Gimelstob, will still be in England for the first road match on Monday (he’s also serving a one-match suspension for insulting comments he made about Anna Kournikova last month on D.C. radio show “The Junkies”).
If he can’t find a replacement, Blake joked, he could have to pencil himself into the lineup. “I still hit enough,” he said.
