Radio Vibes: Black Enterprise August 2008 Issue: 'Money, Power, & Black Radio' - No Update On The June '98 Memo To Advertisers?

Tom Joyner mentioned on his show this morning that the August 2008 issue of Black Enterprise Magazine is titled 'Money, Power, & Black Radio'. On the cover is Tom Joyner and Steve Harvey.

It focuses heavily on the power of Black Syndication Radio. An Issue that I have had mixed feelings about from the beginning though I recognize the upsides and downsides.

When it comes to Syndicated Radio and the way a local station will just flip overnight to a syndicated format without even notifying or consulting that city's listeners, I think that is bad enough, but at the least of it, if they are going to do a surprise "flip" on us, I at least expect that Talent to be someone of interest and that goes for the format they are bringing as well.

Joyner spoke with Black Enterprise Publisher Earl G. Graves, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Earl G. Graves, Ltd. in a quickie phone interview about it.

The article is not online yet but Joyner mentioned to Graves that he was surprised that there was not enough of a focus on the importance of the Sales Departments in Black Radio, and challenges of dealing with Wall Street Advertisers issue that was in the news several years ago and how relevant it is today.

For those who may have missed that story several years ago, here is a link to what it was all about: President of radio advertising firm meets with Black officials to correct bias action.

It had to do with a memo which encouraged advertisers to minimize or eliminate advertising on Black and Hispanic radio stations. The president of a radio advertising firm later apologized for the biased memo that upset African Americans(JET, June 8) and met with Black radio officials and others and promised a plan to correct the bias action.

Of all places to hear or read about a follow up on this issue, I would have thought Black Enterprise would have been the magazine to cover it and give us updates on what has changed, what has improved, and what is the status now? I would think a "10 Year View From The Bridge" would be most appropriate. That is how you stay on them.

How could Black Enterprise do a issue on 'Money, Power and Black Radio' and miss addressing that issue? I will read this issue regardless but that really surprised me BE did not cover that aspect of Black Radio today.

Online this week is an interview with Steve Harvey:
