Berry Gordy was born on this day in 1929 in Detroit, Michigan. The Berry Family relocated to Detroit from Milledgeville, Georgia in 1922. He became the founder and president of Motown Records, the most successful African-American-owned record company. Berry Gordy's "Motown Sound" became synonymous with the 1960's and launched the careers of Diana Ross and the Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Snokey Robinson and the Miracles, the Jackson 5, and many more. Berry Gordy sold his interests in Motown Records to MCA and Boston Ventures in June 1988 for $61 million. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 and published an autobiography, To Be Loved, in 1994.
