Thelonious Sphere Monk (October 10, 1917 – February 17, 1982) was a jazz pianist and composer born on this day.
One of the baddest Jazz Pianists of all time. For any "young folks" reading this, this is the man Jamie Foxx kept talking about when telling his Ray Charles story in interviews when Ray Charles asked Jamie, "Do you know how to play some Thelonius Monk?"
His son is Jazz drummer, composer and bandleader, T.S. Monk. Older R&B heads will probably be familiar with his 1981 hit single 'Bon Bon Vie'(Gimme the Good Life).
