Arthur (Art) Blakey (October 11, 1919–October 16, 1990), also known as Abdullah Ibn Buhaina, was an American Jazz drummer and bandleader and was born on this day.

Art Blakey is credited as one of the creators of BeBop. He also became best known as the founder of the Jazz Messengers. The Jazz Messengers became a proving ground for some of the best modern Jazz musicians, including Horace Silver, Hank Mobley, Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, Sonny Rollins, Wynton Marsalis and Branford Marsalis amongst many others.
