Gritty. Smart. Tough. Slick. Boston. Massachusetts. Real. Thriller. Action. Suspense. Crime Drama. Tinged with Hard Comedy. These are some of the words that come to mind after seeing Martin Scorsese's The Departed. It stars Jack Nicholson, Leo DiCaprio, Mark Wahlberg, Matt Damon, Alec Baldwin, Martin Sheen, Anthony Anderson and Vera Farmiga.

The story is about a modern day Boston crime boss named Costello played by Nicholson and an elite investigative police force led by Sheen that deals with matters as such in Boston. Matt Damon plays a young police detective on the rise in the department but with former childhood ties to Costello (Nicholson). DiCaprio plays a young hot head named Billy Costigan who comes from a family with a checkered past who also tries to become a policeman but didn't make the final cut. He too has family ties to Costello which plays out to be ideal for Boston's police unit so he can go undercover in Costello's criminal organization.

Note: This one was on the strongest performances I have seen DiCaprio do if not the strongest.

The story is solid. The acting is solid. Everyone did their homework. All of the main cast brought their top game. It does contain violence as do most Martin Scorsese films but their are also some lighter moments.

There are a lot of twists and turns in the story but it keeps your attention right to the end.

Without giving anything away, before this movie ended, I felt the need to see it again just because the story is done so well.

I also got a kick out of seeing DiCaprio, Damon and Wahlberg all in one film acting with and against each other together.

The Departed, a possible Oscar contender? I would not be surprised.

Also another Note: Another classic Jack Nicholson performance playing evil like no one but Jack Nicholson can.

I give it a solid "Go See It."

*Note - Rated R with an R emphasized on the violence, sex scenes and crude language. (Seriously, not for the kids.)
