“REMEMBERING KATRINA OBSERVANCE”

NEW ORLEANS, LA -- The New Orleans Agenda is pleased to provide our readers with a comprehensive list of most of the public "REMEMBERING KATRINA OBSERVANCE" events scheduled for New Orleans from Monday, August 21 - Tuesday, August 29, 2006. We call particular attention to the events organized by the African American Leadership Project (AALP) and its supporting organizations, the New Orleans City Council and the City of New Orleans.

We join the AALP in their guiding principles for these remembrance to; 1) honor the loss of life and the risks taken to save others 2) identify and understand the mistakes that were made and 3) affirm hope in a future based on justice and equity, liberation and reconciliation.. We invite all citizens and persons of good will to join us in a solemn, reflective and sober Citizens and People’s Remembrance of the devastating events that forever changed all of our lives. We hope that all of the planned events will help everyone to learn, critique, be healed and affirm hope for the future. We urge your participation and support all of the Observances sponsored by Community groups, the New Orleans City Council, and the City of New Orleans..

We bring special attention to the New Orleans City Council announcement that they are asking families of the victims who perished during Hurricane Katrina to submit a small photo of the deceased that would be displayed during the commemoration period and be permanently housed at the New Orleans Public Library. In Loving Memory: The Hurricane Katrina Memorial Photo Collection is just one of a series of activities the City Council will present for the community to observe August 29.

“Our citizens are still mourning the loss of family, friends, and home,” said Council President Oliver Thomas. “These activities are designed to assist the community in remembering this day with proper perspective.”

Family members and friends are invited to submit a photograph no larger than 4 inches by 6 inches and a short essay about their loved ones. The photographs and essays can be mailed to the New Orleans Post Office in care of Daisy C. Comeaux, District Communications Director, 701 Loyola Avenue Room 10024, New Orleans, Louisiana 70113-9802.
