Gene Upshaw, Head of Football Players' Union, Dies (Update1)
By Laurence Arnold and Aaron Kuriloff
Aug. 21 (Bloomberg) -- Gene Upshaw, a one-time Oakland Raiders lineman who earned a place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame for his playing career and in the sport's history as head of the players' union, died today. He was 63.
The cause was pancreatic cancer, according to the union, which said he only learned of the diagnosis on Sunday. He hadn't publicly revealed that he was ill.
``We are deeply saddened and shocked by the sudden and unexpected death of our leader,'' the union said in a statement.
