Radio Vibes: With Michael Baisden On Vacation This Week, WHUR Once Again "Sounds Like Washington"

"Michael Baisden is on vacation next week. This week and next week."

Although I usually find Michael Baisden entertaining, lively, informative, interesting and I salute him for the creative and fun way he has been able to raise people's consciousness levels on everything from social issues, relationship issues, human issues, Black America issues that are rarely given a public forum, focusing on Old School and NeoSoul R&B music and artists, etc., I have missed my old WHUR. Especially during the drive home. You know, the 3pm to 7pm time slot.

When I heard those words that he was going to be on vacation for two weeks, I thought of one thing: "What is WHUR going to do? Play The Best of The Michael Baisden Show for the next two weeks like the other Love, Lust and Lies cities and affiliates or go back to some of that original great 96.3 WHUR programming that we all grew up with and love in D.C.?"

As we all know, with the popularity of Syndicated Radio that has swept the nation, oftentimes it leaves us wanting. Wanting our stations back. Wanting to hear some of our own local talent back on the radio. Wanting to hear the on-air personality kick it to the local traffic reporter and yes, they really ARE in the same city! LOL!.

It has been a real treat to hear On-Air Personality Natalie Case during this week with the great music programming of Music Director Traci LaTrelle.

Every city has it's own flavor. It's own style. It's own spirit. And that should be reflected in the stations that we hear from city to city, state to state. Not a thousand radio stations that share the same format that are all being programmed by some company 1000 miles away in the middle of America who doesn't seem to have a clue what each city really needs. I believe there is a way to play the hits while staying true to your city's respective unique flavor.

It's that same good feeling I get when I hear WHUR's Tony Richards great show on Saturdays, Crystal Holmes fill in during the week, or listening to Cleveland's Fantastic Fridays on WPFW on Friday afternoons. All so smooth, so cool. You can leave the radio on the station for hours and you know you are getting what you really want to hear with something special always mixed in. It's a treat.

Kudos to WHUR for going this route this week! Musically speaking, I hope next week is more of the same as this week.

Listening to WHUR during the drive home this week really HAS been making me feel like I was hearing my old WHUR that truly "Sounds Like Washington"! ;)
Peace!
