Comic-Con Vibes: 'Afro Samurai: Resurrection' Coming 2009 Spike TV - Rated *TV-MA (17+ Only)

Official Afro-Samurai site: www.afrosamurai.com

I did not see the first Afro Samurai series or DVD that ran January 2007 to February 2007 on Spike TV, but I did see some of the online trailers when they announced it in late 2006.

Today I read Sam Jackson is doing a Afro Samurai 2 entitled 'Afro Samurai: Resurrection' and this time he has enlisted the talents of Mark Hamill and Lucy Liu.

I found the first Afro Samurai trailers to be a little too ultra violent for my taste in what I seek out in animation, especially with the blood and all but I thought it was a creative idea to have it scored with a Hip-Hop soundtrack produced by the RZA and other artists such as Big Daddy Kane, Talib Kweli, Q-Tip, and GZA. The soundtrack was released on CD on January 30, 2007.

I do remember when I discussed Afro Samurai with some of my African-American Anime, Japanimation loving friends, their reactions ranged from "Eh? OK" to "Hmm, I might check that out." That surprised me because so many of them stay so ahead of the curve when it comes to what is coming down the pike that is so cool animation wise. We always get into discussions on the lack of positive images in animation, black heroes and superheroes on film and more but I guess they weren't feeling Afro Samurai. I can't even remember us talking about it later after it aired.

It's funny how the entertainment business works especially with movies and DVDs. Though I did not see the first Afro Samurai, now that they are coming out with a part 2, I have to admit, it does intrigue me just a little bit to see the first one. Maybe that is in part why they are doing this.
