The Life Story of Prince
The life and struggle of Abdul Rahman Ibrahima Sori is a story that captivated our Nation. Once a well-respected Muslim Prince in Africa, Abdul Rahman was brutally enslaved in 1788 and shipped to North America, where he faced 40 years of harsh servitude in the newly settled Mississippi South. He finally was granted his freedom after negotiating with his owner, after which he campaigned through the Northern States raising funds in the hope of freeing his children from slavery, too. It was Abdul Rahman’s determination and faith that kept him motivated to fight for liberty. While he won the freedom of himself and his wife, he was not able to liberate his children. The couple returned to Africa to press for the freedom of their children there, but he died unexpectedly a few months later. Ultimately, a few of his children were freed by his efforts, but the rest remained enslaved in America.
