MAKUENI, KENYA (NOVEMBER 14, 2008) REUTERS -
American tennis star Serena Williams opened a school in her name in
Kenya on Friday (November 14).

The aim of the school, in Makueni constituency, is to provide the
opportunity for hundreds of primary school pupils to pursue secondary school
education.

"We want to ensure all schools have equal facilities, equal
education so that it can help our children be in touch with the world, said
Sam Ongeri, Kenyan Minister of education.

World number two Serena landed in a helicopter in the semi arid area
and was welcomed with cheers and songs by schoolchildren and other community
members.

The nine time singles grand slam winner is in the country as a Hewlett
Packard global ambassador, and alongside the school opening she will also be
taking tennis clinics.

"I am really honoured to have had an opportunity to have Serena
Williams Secondary School here, the first school hopefully of many that we can
open in Kenya and bring education to kids that need it in these areas,"
said Serena.

"When you look at someone like Barack Obama; from a farm child to
the president of the United States, it's just amazing all the things that can
be done through education."
