Barack Obama's response to Bush's final State of the Union


I usually watch The State of The Union every year, as they say, just because. It usually does not matter who is The President, I usually watch it. Yet tonight, for numerous reasons, I just couldn't bring myself to watch The State of The Union. Every time I thought about watching it as 9:00 pm drew nearer, I just wasn't feeling it.

Maybe it's because I knew how it would probably go, this being Bush's last State of The Union address. Maybe it's because I knew in advance that the various commentators would try and make more of Bush and his "legacy" whatever that is supposed to mean, then it actually was.

Maybe it was because I just couldn't stand the standing ovations and cheers President Bush would get when he made certain pre-written points.

Or maybe it was because I knew that as usual, after the State of The Union, every channel goes into "spin mode" followed by a full 24 hours of coverage and replays of the speech on all the cable networks and everyone from left wing to right wing, rehash, analyze and re-analyze everything that The President said.

For this and many other reasons, I just could not bring myself to watch it tonight.

I did not know Barack Obama gave the Democratic Response afterwards so I am glad I caught this later on in the night on the net. His speech pretty much summarizes why I did not watch it this year too.

I know I will catch it all in the papers, radio and TV tomorrow anyway.

*Blog Post Correction 01.29.08: The official Democratic Response was given by Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius. NBC News has confirmed that Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, who gave the Democratic response at last night's State of the Union, will endorse Obama today in Kansas.
