W.C. Handy Birthday - "Father of the Blues"


(November 16th, 1873 – March 28th, 1958) - It was on this day in 1873 that W.C. Handy was born in Florence, Alabama. He became best known as a composer and Blues musician and earned the nickname "Father of the Blues." Among his most noteworthy compositions are "Memphis Blues," "St. Louis Blues," and "Beale Street Blues." W.C. Handy also formed a music publishing company with Harry Pace and became one of the most important influences in African-American music. His 1941 autobiography, Father of the Blues has become a sourcebook and reference on The Blues.
