Holder Urges Justice Dept. Workers to Discuss Race Openly
Thursday, February 19, 2009; Page A02

Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. urged employees yesterday to take advantage of Black History Month to begin a dialogue about race, labeling the United States a "nation of cowards" for not discussing the country's checkered history openly.

Holder, the first African American to serve as the nation's top law enforcement officer, said that Justice Department workers have a special responsibility to acknowledge social limits and to push past them.

The department's civil rights division, which came to being half a century ago to help the Freedom Riders and students seeking to integrate public schools, more recently has been the target of criticism from Democrats who say it has lost its way.

Holder told employees that the level of social interaction among people of different races is "bleak" and that it in many ways does not "differ significantly from the country that existed some 50 years ago."

Demographic changes that within decades will result in no single racial majority only underscore the need for openness and, in some cases, confrontation on issues that separate people, Holder said.

He added: "If we are to make progress in this area, we must feel comfortable enough with one another, and tolerant enough of each other, to have frank conversations about racial matters that continue to divide us."

The Joint Center for Political and Economical Studies has released a new report on how African-Americans were key to President Barack Obama's Victory.

The report goes on to say that:

"...of the 24.8 million African-Americans eligible to vote, 16.6 million (or 66.8 percent) actually voted, smashing the previous record of 58.5 percent in 1964. In addition to record-setting turnout, Obama received 95 percent of the Black vote, bettering President Lyndon B. Johnson's 94 percent in 1964, the previous high. Conversely, Sen. John McCain received only 4 percent of the Black vote, a smaller percentage then any GOP nominees in history."

LOOKING FOR LINCOLN | Preview | PBS

Airing Feb. 11, 2009 on PBS (check local listings) LOOKING FOR LINCOLN, presented and written by Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., addresses many of the controversies surrounding Abraham Lincoln race, equality, religion, politics, and depression by carefully interpreting evidence from those who knew him and those who study him today.

In the film, Gates shows how the Lincoln legend grew out of controversy, greed, love, clashing political perspectives, power struggles, and considerable disagreement over how our 16th president should be remembered. His quest to piece together Lincolns complex life takes him from Illinois to Gettysburg to Washington, D.C., and face-to-face with people who live with Lincoln every day relic hunters, re-enactors, and others for whom the study of Lincoln is a passion.

'Lincoln On Race and Slavery' & 'Looking for Lincoln with Henry Louis Gates, Jr.' Tonight On PBS

Book Description: Generations of Americans have debated the meaning of Abraham Lincoln's views on race and slavery. He issued the Emancipation Proclamation, authorized the use of black troops during the Civil War, supported a constitutional amendment to outlaw slavery, and eventually advocated giving the vote to black veterans and to what he referred to as "very intelligent negroes." But he also harbored grave doubts about the intellectual capacity of African Americans, publicly used the n-word until at least 1862, enjoyed "darky" jokes and black-faced minstrel shows, and long favored permanent racial segregation and the voluntary "colonization" of freed slaves in Africa, the Caribbean, or South America. In this book--the first complete collection of Lincoln's important writings on both race and slavery--readers can explore these contradictions through Lincoln's own words. Acclaimed Harvard scholar and documentary filmmaker Henry Louis Gates, Jr., presents the full range of Lincoln's views, gathered from his private letters, speeches, official documents, and even race jokes, arranged chronologically from the late 1830s to the 1860s.

Complete with definitive texts, rich historical notes, and Gates's original introduction, this book charts the progress of a war within Lincoln himself. We witness his struggles with conflicting aims and ideas--a hatred of slavery and a belief in the political equality of all men, but also anti-black prejudices and a determination to preserve the Union even at the cost of preserving slavery. We also watch the evolution of his racial views, especially in reaction to the heroic fighting of black Union troops.

At turns inspiring and disturbing, Lincoln on Race and Slavery is indispensable for understanding what Lincoln's views meant for his generation--and what they mean for our own.

Who shot Billey Joe Johnson?
By Charles Robinson and Dan Wetzel, Yahoo! Sports

BENNDALE, Miss. – Billey Joe Johnson Sr. opens the driver’s-side door of his dead son’s Silverado and begins to examine some of the leftover splatter. It clings to the dashboard, leeches out of air conditioning vents. Some of it even found a resting place on the truck’s exterior.

“There goes a hunk of meat right there,” the father said, pointing to a nickel-sized fragment of his son’s brain. “How’d it get over here?”

In the back seat, a geometry book rests next to camouflage clothing and empty boxes of buckshot. Billey Joe Johnson Jr. often woke up at 4 a.m. to hunt before heading to George County High School, where everyone knew him as the football star who would escape crushing rural poverty by running from it.

Piles of recruiting letters litter the back seat, the remnants of life as one of the most sought-after running backs in the Class of 2010. Alabama wanted Billey Joe. So did Notre Dame. And dozens of other schools. He was ready to commit to Auburn. By many accounts Billey Joe was a popular, big-dreaming, clean-living kid. So it’s no wonder his father stands in the yard next to a single-wide trailer, trying to play forensic expert. Searching – like many in this rural community – for answers about who shot his son.

Local authorities stopped Billey Joe for a traffic violation on the morning of Dec. 8, and they say the truck is simply the site of a terrible tragedy. But to the elder Johnson, it’s a crime scene.

Nearly two months later, only one fact is certain: Instead of running out of George County as a football hero, Billey Joe was buried beneath it at the age of 17.
